The scope of works for the interior detailing at the Iress offices at 2929 William Nichol Drive, Sandton required a number of custom made interior design elements. Each element was designed with the culture of the company in mind which lead to various elements being designed and fabricated in our Decolite lightweight system.

Due to the fact that Decolite allows such ease of design when it comes to 3-dimensional decorative interior detailing, the professional team elected to use our system for the main reception feature wall, the boardroom features, and the boardroom lighting elements.

Protea Court, on the corner of Sandton Drive and Rivonia Road, Sandton, Johannesburg, was designed to become the new state of the art entrance to Sandton City Shopping Centre.

The intricate design required the circular shape of the external ring beam to be set at an angle of 11 degrees, thus creating an ellipse.

 State of the art design

The steel structure, formed from I beams, created the basic shape of the roof over the court.  Each I beam, supported form the lift shaft bent over rand out to meet up with the external ring beam. The challenge was to clad the ring beams in such a way as to create solid forms increasing in size while extending over the space. The material of choice was Decolite. Decolite allows for complete freedom of design, as each profile is different in size and shape to the next element.

Engineered Fixing Details

Several design considerations were suggested for the fixing of the Decolite profiles to the I beams. In order to ensure the correct fitted element, several mock-ups were manufactured to ensure the correct engineering.

Cladding of I beams

The entire structure was formed from the steel I beams and then each clad with a Decolite profile. This included the radial beams, the bifurcating arms, the vertical columns and the internal and external ring beams.

Hard wearing and lightweight, Decolite allows for flexibility in design and allows for any 3 dimensional feature detail. The creative trees formed in Decolite, are the feature wall in the public area of the Southern Sun Hotel in Maputo.

On reflecting on the surroundings of the hotel, it is easy to see how the significant tree on the eastern face influences the design of the Decolite trees, internally. The relief of 100mm, offers a depth perspective which is difficult to create in any other material.

Design Freedom for feature detailing

Flexibility in interior design is key when offering creative ideas to a client, and where Decolite comes to the fore and is the natural material of choice. The final element was cut in to panels, and coated in our hard wearing polyuria finish. The panels allowed of ease of transportation to Mozambique.

Decolite has proved to be the ideal material for internal and external detailing  not only in Southern Africa but Sun Saharan Africa as well.

Bulkhead Suspended on Ceiling

The brief was to create separate areas within the basement space, but retaining the open space feel to the restaurant.

Design freedom allows for curved bulkheads

The separate areas allowed diners to easily identify service types and check out cashiers. The individual hubs were identified by the addition of lightweight bulkheads below the lay-in ceilings. Decolite was once again the material of choice due to its lightweight nature while allowing complete design freedom

Bulkhead Suspended on Ceiling

The bulkheads, either curved or linear, were suspended below the ceiling T's without the requirement of any additional structure.

Decolite Signage on Bulkhead

Decolite was also used to form the lettering above the directional signage above the tills. Each letter was individually wire cut and then adhered to the painted Decolite bulkhead.
