Concrete Replacement

On the One and Only Hotel project in Cape Town, Decolite lightweight profiles were designed to replace concrete elements intended for the external detailing. The Sun International flagship in the V and A Waterfront, Cape Town is a well-known landmark and tourist destination. The aesthetics of the elevations were enhanced by making use of Decolite to simulate the non-structural requirements of the concrete elements.

External elements replaced concrete

The external detailing required a large concrete overhang which ran the length of the elevation. Originally designed in concrete, this element would have created an incredible point load on the supporting columns and would have been time-consuming to cast. However, the lightweight Decolite elements, which are manufactured of size off-site, are easy and light to install which making the installation far less time-consuming and alleviating pressure on the main contractor's programme.

External Fins

Exterior Detailing - Vertical Fins

The Decolite vertical fins to the Virgin Active in Menlyn Maine Precinct Pretoria,  where a perfect application of external detailing. The massive 10m elements, in a simulated concrete finish, where chamfered in 2 directions in accordance with the architect’s requirements. Due to the fact that there are no limitations with regards to panel sizes, we are able to create the illusion that the elements are fabricated from large pieces of concrete. With Decolite, it is easy to imitate chamfered edges and Ferrel holes, as you would find in standard concrete external detailing.

External Fins Easy to Install

The Decolite external fins were fixed to a lightweight steel structure by means of a chemical and mechanical fixing system. Due to the ease of installation, we are able to minimise our time on-site thus enabling the whole programme to be accelerated.

Decolite is the perfect material for an external application due to its extremely hard external casing, making it the architects product of choice when considering unusual or large external elements.

EXTERNAL CEILINGS

For this project, we were required to design supply and install external ceilings in the form of eaves closures. The architect required a lightweight custom made closure element to the space between the roof and facade. Due to fact that Decolite elements are all custom made,  allows non-standard panels and for each elevation to have equal size panels regardless of the length of the elevation.

The ceiling panels were then individually detailed, cut with a hot wire, and then coated with our hard-wearing external coating. We have currently completed 3 of the 8 phases currently planned for Monte Circle. Monte Circle office park forms part of the Monte Casino precinct in Fourways Johannesburg.

I BEAM IN DECOLITE

I-beam formed from Decolite

The Eastgate 20 development on the corner of Katherine Street and Grayston Drive in Sandton, was completed in 2012. Paragon architects considered the position of the property in creating the AAA offices which are now home to PPC Johannesburg.

As an integral part of the functionality of the office space, the designers considered the parking for not only vehicles, but for bicycles too.

Simulated I-beam in Decolite offers form and function

Due to the fact that the bike shed required some form of roof structure, the architects decided to make use of  Decolite as a material. The vertical steel posts provided the basic structure which allowed for the design and support of a light weight non structural element. The horizontal I beam, manufactured, from high density  EPS  and coated with our hard wearing external material, formed a frame to the external ceiling while allowing a roof type element to the bus shelter.

FASCIA CLADDING

External Fascia Cladding

Stoneridge Mall in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, built in 2003, was due for a refurbishment in order to bring the premises in line with the growing development in the area. Designing a elegant curved fascia, added to the new improved aesthetic.

Part of the renovation was to up upgrade to the external fascia’s bordering the general open food court. The curved external fascia also had to tie in with the external ceiling in order to create a new functional aesthetic, which all tied in with the new canvas shading.

Due to the flexibility of design when making use of Decolite as a material, the architect was able to design a curved vertical fascia which was light weight with no restriction to the radius.

The curved element, was designed with additional decorative elements to further enhance the aesthetic.

EXTERNAL DETAILING

 External Detailing with Decolite Profiles

The One and Only Hotel project in the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in  Cape Town, made extensive use of Decolite for the external detailing. The Sun International flagship in the V and A Waterfront, Cape Town is a well-known landmark and tourist destination and as such had to reflect its reputation in the architecture.

Decolite lightweight profiles were designed to replace concrete elements intended for the external detailing.  The elevations were enhanced by making use of Decolite custom made profiles to simulate the non-structural requirements of the concrete elements for such elements as the window header boxes and large window sills.

Flexibility in Design with Decolite

Decolite is a lightweight, hard-wearing material, which can be formed, through wire cutting, to any 3-dimensional profile offering complete ability to conceive new decorative creations without limitations. The seamless elements on the external facade were coated to simulate concrete visually.

External detailing to facades

The external detailing on the project required complete freedom in design, where panel sizes and limited radii would not infringe on the overall aesthetics.
